Beep
Opening doors everywhere
Beep is the UK’s first fully digital campus card. A revolutionary platform which will help redefine how universities view security and will change the student experience for the better.
Started by a group of students from the University of East Anglia and Cambridge University back in 2018, Beep has since grown and developed into the leading supplier of digital campus cards for UK universities. A straight-forward and streamlined solution, over the last 4 years we have focussed on ensuring compatibility and accessibility for all. The Beep platform is supported by a vast array of security providers, allowing it to work with an institution’s existing security infrastructure and helping universities get the very best out of their access control solution.
Our Purpose
Beep implements advanced, secure and intuitive digital campus card solutions for universities to help them improve campus security and provide a better overall user experience for their staff and students. We believe that plastic cards have no place for the future at universities and that a digital solution is the only way forward.
We want to encourage the adoption of digital campus cards by making them as easy and accessible for universities as possible, and we intend to be a global leader in this space. We have spent years getting to know our target audience and understanding the pains and concerns that our clients face – ensuring that our platform has been designed specifically to help deliver the best customer and user experience possible and alleviate any pre-existing concerns around switching to a digital platform. This understanding goes beyond security & access control and permeates through all areas of university life, giving us a rich understanding of our customer’s values – taking Beep beyond the status of being a simple door key.
We also understand that security and practicality shouldn’t come at the sacrifice of other core values and that we are part of a far larger ecosystem than ourselves. For this reason, we strive for sustainability and act responsibly when it comes to the environment, not only ensuring that we do everything we can to help internally – but also helping universities to reduce their own plastic usage and CO2 emissions through the adoption of a digital platform.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
The move to a digital platform not only benefits the institution making the switch, but also helps to support sustainable solutions and look after the environment for future generations.
Each year, around 28 tonnes of plastic campus cards are produced in the UK – with the majority of them finding their way to landfill. With 42% of those cards needing to be replaced over the course of a year (either from being lost or stolen) the production and distribution of campus cards releases around 220 tonnes of CO2eq into the atmosphere every year in the UK alone. Expanding that number globally, this equates to around 44,000 tonnes of CO2eq, or 132,000 tonnes in the average time it takes to complete an undergraduate degree.
At Beep, we’re committed to doing our bit for the environment. By supporting universities around the world in their switch to a digital solution, we’re reducing reliance on plastic and promoting sustainability on an institutional level – just our way of making the world a greener place.
A Start-up Story
Beep first began as a student project at the University of East Anglia in 2018 with a goal of developing a simple platform that would allow students to open doors around their university using a smartphone.
Today, following a collaboration with students from Cambridge University and a few successful investment rounds, Beep exists as one of the most exciting and fastest growing companies in the access control space, partnering with some of the largest security providers in the world and compatible with over 85% of UK universities – and that number is quickly growing.
With offices based in London and Norwich, Beep is at the heart of the UK tech scene and has plans to expand quickly beyond the UK and set up in the US, Australia and the rest of Europe. We’re very excited for what the next few years have in stall and hope that you can join us for it. It’s been a journey to get to where we are now, but we’re only just getting started.
